We believe that cooperation in the industry is essential when it comes to initiating change. Therefore, The BHive? partners with organizations and industry stakeholders with similar goals. Here, we would like to introduce our industry partner Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
Global Standard GmbH - a self-financed non-profit organisation - administers the Global Organic Textile Standard which was developed by leading international standard setters to define globally recognised requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles, from field to fashion.
GOTS has since become one of the world's leading processing standards for textiles made from organic fibres.
It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain with full traceability from field to finished product and requires compliance with social criteria as well.
The 6th version of the GOTS was released in March 2020
Now in its 6th version, GOTS covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, trading and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibres. GOTS focuses on compulsory criteria only, a company participating in the GOTS certification scheme must work in compliance with all criteria of the standard.
Key provisions include a ban on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), highly hazardous chemicals (such as azo dyes and formaldehyde) and child labour, while requiring strong social compliance management systems and strict wastewater treatment practices.
GOTS‘ mission is the development, implementation, verification, protection and promotion of the Global Organic Textile Standard. GOTS contributes to sustainable development. Certification to GOTS ensures compliance with each of the 17 sustainable development goals.
GOTS and The BHive? as long-time industry partners
GOTS is often associated with the labeling of organic textile products - but did you know, GOTS also approves chemical products? With the partnership between GOTS and GoBlu, GOTS approved chemical products are included in The BHive? system. This way, brands and factories can easily see in their chemical inventory which of their chemical products are compliant with GOTS and MRSL standards.
From GOTS: Measures on COVID-19 outbreak
"During these troubling times, the global apparel industry must work together to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Given these circumstances, GOTS recognizes the challenges companies are currently facing when it comes to keeping operations running while maintaining certification without on-site in-person audits. To provide solutions for certified operators GOTS developed measurements accordingly.
First, the time for recertification has been extended, and second, virtual audits are now allowed under certain circumstances, even for a new certification.
GOTS has developed guidelines for such virtual audits in consultation with Certification Bodies and continues to fine-tune them. They continue to review the situation almost on a daily basis and are ready to provide further solutions as may be necessary."
